Men and women equal in Lions

The Lioness Club of Yarrawonga is undergoing a major change.

Lions Clubs International, the managing body for all Lions Clubs around the world have recently made the decision to convert all Lionesses to full Lions members to modernise the structure of clubs and give equal rights to both men and women.

Historically the Lioness movement was created approximately 40 years ago by Lions International for women who wished to serve their community.

At that time women were not accepted into Lions Clubs. Lioness Clubs were deemed to be a project of their sponsoring Lions Club.

They did not have a vote at conferences and needed approval by Lions for many activities.

All quite stunning and underlined the bargains treasures to be found in these shops.

A win/ win situation for the environment and the wonderful charities these shops support.

Councillor Bronwyn Thomas did a wonderful job and also presided over the distribution of lucky door prizes- a beautiful floral arrangement donated by local florist Alyssa Pyle also, bespoke dog collars donated by Breanne Farr and homemade soap by Anastasia Bruce, other local businesswomen.

Everyone was treated to a cuppa and delicious morning tea provided by the Savernake locals.

The local Lionesses see this as a positive move to give their club more independence and hopefully attract new members.

The proposed new name is to be Lions Club of Lake Mulwala which was chosen to differentiate themselves from the existing Lions Club of Yarrawonga.

Both clubs will continue to work together as volunteers, raising money and serving the community while enjoying each other’s company.

To mark the significant and exciting transition into a new era the Lionesses are planning to celebrate by holding a changeover lunch to launch their new identity on at noon on Thursday, June 17 at the Endeavour Room at ClubMulwala.

Interested people are invited along as are existing Lions Club members from across the district.

To attend the lunch or for more information contact Secretary, Helen White 0407521278 or flindgem@westnet.com.au.
