Plants Raised $20,000 for Health Research

Gordon Oakley was one of them.

Gordon a Rotarian for over 50 years championed many Community Service Projects but had special passion for the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund.

Gordon’s novel, successful Pelargoniums project initiated in the 1980s was a continuing activity by the Rotary Club for some 10 years which raised over $20,000 for Rotary Health Research.

The Pelargonium project worked like this – the club had access to 75 different varieties in Rotarians’ gardens.

In February, the plants are pruned, and cuttings saved. The cuttings were then planted into boxes of river sand and labelled, after two months in the sand the roots have developed.

The rooted cuttings were planted into pots. Club members took the planted pots home and cared for them until October when the plants come into flower and are ready for sale.

Rotarians sold the flowering plants at street stalls, Rotary markets, horticultural shows and doctors’ medical clinics.

The Research Fund showed its appreciation of support by naming senior participant member Gordon Oakley a companion of the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund.

The Rotary Club of Yarrawonga has had many giants of Community Service in the Club’s 75 years’ history.
