Bureau station to stay in Yarrawonga

BOM currently lease approximately 256m2 within the parcel of land owned by council at the Yarrawonga Aerodrome for the purposes of the radar station and expressed their intention to construct a new weather watch radar station adjacent to the current site and decommission the existing infrastructure.

The new lease will be essentially the same conditions as currently in place with the BOM securing the tenure for a period of 20 years (10+5+5) from the expiry date of their current lease with a rental on commencement of $1 per annum.

All councillors voted unanimously in favour of the motion, all conquering that it is a great asset for the shire.

“When we have rain due, we jump on the bureau and straight to Yarrawonga; it’s a vital piece of information at our fingertips so we need to do all we can to keep it,” Cr Kevin Bourke said.

“As mentioned at our previous council meeting, we are extremely lucky to have this in Yarrawonga,” Cr Peter Elliott added.

“I still stand by my previous comments and conquer with Cr Elliott’s comments that we are extremely lucky to have this service and it is great for Yarrawonga and the Moira Shire that this important service is located here,” Cr Peter Lawless

“The Wimmera and Mallee have been screaming out for this type of service so we are lucky to have it in our shire and the new station may even be improved with further technology.”

Following community consultation and consideration of submissions received through the process, council entered into a lease agreement with the BOM for the portion of land at the Yarrawonga Aerodrome for the construction of a new Weather Watch Radar Station and authorised the CEO to sign and seal the lease documents.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) Weather Watch Radar Station which is situated at the Yarrawonga Aerodrome will remain in town after Moira Shire Council voted to continue the partnership.
