Keenans second chance

Local connection Simon Keenan, who is competing in the Mens Eight Rowing for Australia at the Tokyo Olympics, will have a second chance to make the finals today (Wednesday, July 28).

Simon is the son of Judy and Peter ‘Crackers’ Keenan and grandson of Bernie and Blanch Keenan. He also has many relatives in town, namely the well-known Keenan family as well as the Dowling’s and McNamara’s.

The Australian eight finished in fourth place in heat one on Saturday with a time of 5:43.66 resulting in them qualifying for repechage (a contest in which the best-placed of those who did not win heats compete for a place in the final).

The Aussies will now take on Romania, United States, New Zealand and Great Britain in the repechage to secure a place in finals with the event scheduled to take place at 12.50pm today, however there is expected adverse weather conditions so scheduling may change.
