Leo’s gift has trail on track

BY JARED LOUGHNAN

Burramine farmer Leo Kelly has generously leased a small pocket of land to help complete an impressive tourism trail for the area.

A stretch of 500 metres was needed across a corner of the Kelly farm to connect an important stretch of the Yarrawonga to Burramine Cycling Walking trail which travels right alongside the Murray River.

The 50-year land use lease signed between Moira Shire Council and Leo Kelly will ensure the trail becomes a major attraction for visitors and locals for years to come.

“It’s an honour to be asked and able to assist the shire in this worthy project,” Mr Kelly said.

“The Burramine to Yarrawonga trail is an important and wonderful project for not only tourism but families and visitors to enjoy for generations.”

Moira Shire Council Mayor Libro Mustica commended Leo Kelly on recognising the importance of the trail continuing along this important stretch of the picturesque river bends

“It is a fantastic contribution from Leo and he was happy to do his bit for the community,” Mayor Mustica said.

“It is an important link that avoided the trail having to hook back out onto the road network and then back into the river bends.

“This is such a fantastic view, and it would have been a shame if the trail could not continue along this beautiful stretch of the river.”

The overall trail loop is expected to wind around 40km from Yarrawonga to Burramine and back. Signage will be erected guiding cyclists and keen walkers through the river bends. Funding of $617,950 for the whole project was provided from the Murray Darling Basin Economic Development Program (Round 2).

The sealed 13.4km Yarrawonga to Burramine Cycling Walking Trail alongside the Murray Valley Highway is expected to be finished in December with an official opening planned for Wednesday, December 15.
