Time to go fishing:

Fishos can look forward to again casting a line for Murray Cod as cod season opens today, Wednesday, December 1, following a three-month closure to enhance breeding. Cod Opening will also be welcomed by thousands of anglers this weekend for the return of the Lake Mulwala Cod Opening Classic.

The Mulwala Football Netball Club are getting everything ready for its iconic Yamaha Cod Classic fishing competition this weekend from Friday, December 3 to Sunday, December 5.

Entering its 22nd year, the Cod Classic will have a new look with event organiser Tony Bennett saying he is pleased the event could still go ahead this year after having to be cancelled last year.

“It’s great to be able to put on something decent this year,” Mr Bennett said.

“Plenty book their accommodation from year to year off the back of the Cod Classic and it will be great to see them back again.

“The event is looking to be bigger than originally thought with around 1400 entries entered so far and capacity allowed up to 3000.”

From 7pm Friday night there will be a ‘Talking cod with the Captain – Thomas Pinter” event.

“He has had more success here on the lake than any other angler going around so he will share his tips and tricks on how to catch the magical Murray Cod out here,” Tony said.

“Planning has been incredibly hard in the lead up, but the MFNC are sure all competitors will understand that changes would have to be made for this iconic event to continue in these difficult times.”

The Cod Classic celebrates the opening to a new Murray Cod fishing season at the “Home of the Murray Cod” – Lake Mulwala.

The 2021 event will see 3 x Yamaha – Quintrex – Humminbird boating packages up for grabs along with $60K in prizes. Fishing sections will remain the same along with many major lucky door prizes.

Flathead Fred will be there for the kids on the Saturday evening.

A new addition to this year’s event will see a “Mega Raffle” being conducted on the Saturday night with a plethora of prizes.

Meals will not be included in your entry fee ($90 Adults, $45 Juniors) but a host of on-site food vendors will be present serving quality foods.

Online entries have now closed however those still wanting to enter the Cod Classic can still do so in person from 4pm onwards on Friday.

Gates open from 4pm at Lonsdale Reserve, Hume St Mulwala.
