A Grade grind out 8 run victory

Yarrawonga Mulwala Cricket Club A Grade have scored a hard fought 8 run victory over the Wangaratta Magpies at Norm Minns Oval in Wangaratta.

The YMCC were able to post 8 for 166 off their 40 overs and then bowled Wangaratta out for 158 on the last ball of the innings and day.

The win was dedicated to Sean McLarty, who passed away after illness late in the week. All teams for the YMCC wore black armbands as a sign of respect and blue armbands to help raise awareness of stomach cancer.

The YMCC won the toss and batted first on a batsman’s paradise and three crucial partnerships set the YMCC to a strong total.

Opener Josh Lawrence and number 3 Matt Knight steered the team to 74 in a 58-run partnership. Knight was dismissed for 19, bringing Matt Casey to the crease for his first game of the year.

Again, Lawrence and Casey were able to form a partnership adding 35 runs before Casey fell and three runs later Lawrence fell for a match high 70 runs from 74 balls.

At 4 for 112 from 29 overs the YMCC suffered a mini collapse with 3 wickets falling for just 18 runs.

However, Angus McMillan and Captain Reid Clarke steered the YMCC to a total of 8 for 166 with their partnership yielding 27 runs from 4 overs. McMillan 20 and Clarke 19 not out.

After the innings break, the YMCC took to the bowling crease with Matt McCabe and Angus McMillan opening the bowling.

In their 9 over spell, YMCC restricted the Magpies to 22 runs. McMillan claimed the opening wicket in the tenth over with the score on 24.

A bowling change of Rory Bartlett and Brock McCabe brought one wicket apiece with the score on 33.

The Magpies were then able to settle in to a partnership between Davies and Matheson that yielded 73 runs in 16 overs to see the Magpies 4 for 106 when Matheson fell to YMCC bowler Matt McCabe.

Angus McMillan introduced back into the attack brought an instant effect when he claimed a valuable wicket with the score on 124 in the 35th over.

With five overs remaining in their 40 over innings, the Magpies needed 36 runs in five overs, however some excellent fielding generated three quick run outs with fielders Harry Wheeler, Matt McCabe, Josh Lawrence, Matt Casey, Ben Welsh and wicket keeper Reid Clarke all playing a role.

Matt Casey bowled 8 overs including the last of the innings taking the final two wickets to see the Magpies all out for 158.

A great fighting performance for the YMCC Lakers sees them two wins from 4 games with a draw as well.

The next game will see the YMCC take on

A Reserve

The A Reserve boys played Wangaratta Magpies in a tight battle on Saturday with The Lakers taking their 4th win of the season to start the year at 4-0. The Magpies won the toss and sent the Laker boys in to bat. The opening partnership didn’t last long when Brendan Hill left the ball only to see the new “zing” bails and stumps light up. (1/0).

The wickets kept falling throughout the day with the highest partnership of 25 for the day which the boys picked up on in the post-match team chat. Plenty of areas to improve on. The bowlers were given 124 runs to defend and they did not disappoint. Caleb Mitchell opened up the bowling claiming a wicket in his second over.

Tom Draffin coming up from B Grade showed he can bowl a really good ball, he failed to get a wicket but only bowled 3 overs after getting a hamstring injury chasing a ball in the 7th over.

Bailey Frauenfelder and Mitch Collins-Bye choked the opposition’s runs and made the Magpies batsmen take some risks that turned into wickets.

Bailey took 3 wickets, while Collins-Bye got 2 including the crucial wicket of the opener that was set on 34.

Jacob Bartlett cleaned up the tail grabbing 3 wickets for 4 runs. And to finish off Kyle Archibald got the final wicket to make his mycricket stats look a little bit better. YMCC 10/124. Ben Irvine 36, Jacob Bartlett 30 Defeated Wang Magpies 10/80. Jacob Bartlett 3/4 off 3, Bailey frauenfelder 3/14 off 8, Mitch Collins-bye 2/13 off 8.

B Grade

B Grade hosted their first game at Mulwala for the season. Wet weather in the week leading up to the game hampered preparations but a reasonable pitch was presented for proceedings to begin. Rovers Bruck were the opponents and winning the toss they elected to have a bowl.

Veterans O’Brien and late inclusion Athanitis opened the batting and navigated their way through the first 6 overs.

Runs were not flowing for the Lakers and at 3/26 when O’Brien fell for 19, things didn’t look good. They then got worse as the Lakers lost another two wickets with the score still on 26.

Some good lower order batting from Jyda House (15), Gus Browning (21no) and Tom Lovel (10) put a bit more respect into the Lakers score.

Browning and Lovel having a 42-run partnership for the 8th wicket. To their credit the team managed to bat out the overs and finish with 92 runs in total.

Would this be enough for the Lakers to defend, only time would tell.

In the field and the Lakers started with Reece Norman and Jyda House taking the new ball. It didn’t take long for the Lakers to find their rhythm.

Norman striking in the first over taking the valuable wicket of Gary Elliott. House also striking in his first over and continuing his good bowling form from C Grade.

The pair continued to bowl tightly and pressure the Rovers Bruck batters and the fielders held every opportunity that came their way as well.

By the 11th over the Lakers had taken 7 wickets, 4 to Norman and 3 to House for just 9 runs. Rovers Bruck 7/9.

At the end of their respective spells, the tidy figures of Reece Norman 7 overs, 3 maidens 4/7 and Jyda House 6 overs, 4 maidens 3/3.

Harry Barker and Rod Peters then tidying up the final 3 wickets between them, Peters with figures of 2/2 which included a catch by son Jett.

The first time the father/son have combined to take a wicket. Barker finishing with 1/11. Rovers Bruck all out for 23 runs in the 18th over.
