Yarrawonga’s stars help to secure title

Five of Yarrawonga’s tennis stars recently competed in the Inter Regional Victorian Country Championships in Horsham. This event is open to all players from regional Victoria.

The standard of the tennis was excellent with many highly ranked players participating.

Yarrawonga Tennis Club is in the Goulburn Region and consisted of around 35 players. After a very successful three days the Goulburn Region was crowned Victoria’s best region ahead of Barwon which is predominantly Geelong based players.

All of Yarrawonga’s players performed admirably with some outstanding results.

Liam Williams was the 18/u Consolation Singles Winner and 18/u Doubles Runners Up (with Shepparton’s Nick Damianopoulos).

Jack Bassett was the 16/u Singles Winner, 16/u Doubles Winner (with Shepparton’s Zach Ranson) and 16/u Mixed Semi Finalist.

Lucy Bassett was the 14/u Singles Semi Finalist, 14/u Doubles Winner (with Stanhope’s Jinaya Nurse) and 14/u Mixed Winner (with Shepparton’s Thomas Ranson).

Hayley Bennett played in the 14/u Singles, 14/u Doubles and was the 14/u Mixed Quarter Finalist.

Tess Bassett was the 12/u Singles Semi Finalist, 12/u Doubles, 12/u Consolation Mixed Winner.

Next year this three-day event will be held in Yarrawonga. This is a significant coup for the local Tennis Club and also for the region.

It is considered the premier teams’ event by Tennis Victoria. It is likely to bring in excess of 250 players to the region which will create a great atmosphere.

All Stars Tennis Tournament

The fourth annual All Stars Tennis Tournament is currently being played. This event attracts players from throughout south-eastern Australia.

The tournament comprises of Open events and the fields for both the ladies and mens’ event is very strong.

The tournament also has a range of junior events starting at 10/u up to 16/u for both boys and girls. Once again some of Australia’s highest ranked juniors will be participating and the tennis will be of a very high standard.

Good luck to club members Jack Bassett, Tess Bassett, Xaviers Chessels, Amy Lairson, Mile Lairson, Viktor Lairson, Oliver Mathews, Liam Williams, Harry Wren and Lachlan Wren.

It is great to see so many of the clubs juniors and ‘older’ juniors participating.

Tuesday Night Mens Tennis

The Tuesday Night Mens Tennis competition will resume this week. With a brief rest for Christmas it is anticipated that the men will not have lost any of their skill and will be set to dominate the courts.

Battle of the Boosey

After delaying their Round 5 match due to harvest, Tungamah Green and Tungamah Gold played their long-awaited Wilby and District Tennis Association game on Saturday night.

Tungamah Green continued their dominance in the mens section claiming all 6 sets. Josh Buerckner, Tom Wren, Luke Buerckner and Will Cooper each winning 3 sets and playing some terrific tennis.

In the ladies section it was the total opposite with Tungamah Gold winning 5 of the 6 sets. Debbie Hayes and Taijan Ussher won all 3 sets whilst Mandy Williams and Chelsea Sidebottom won 2 sets. For Green the Buerckner combination of Jenny and Kylie won their sole set.

In the mixed matches to finish the night Tungamah Green prevailed 3 sets to 1. Tungamah Green claiming the Boosey Cup 6 points to 2.

The ladder after Round 5 is Telford 30, Savernake 26, Tungamah Green 24, Wilby 22, Burramine 18, Tungamah Gold 18, Mulwala Maroon 11 and Mulwala Gold 11.

The Wilby Competition will resume in full Friday, January 28.
