YMCC A Grade suffer second defeat

Yarrawonga Mulwala Cricket Club A Grade have endured a second defeat this season in WDCA Round 9 action.

Playing against City Colts at the Bill O’Callaghan Oval in Wangaratta; the YMCC batted first and struggled to find runs whilst losing early wickets.

Captain Reid Clarke and Ben Irvine fell with the score on 7 and Zac Fraser followed just 2 runs later to have the YMCC at 3 for 9.

Matt Casey and Matt Knight partnered for 25 runs, and when Casey fell with the score at 24, Ben Welsh combined with a 23-run partnership before Knight fell for 20.

At 5 for 47, the Lakers slumped to 7 for 66 before Fraser Smart on debut and Angus McMillan formed the best partnership of the day. In a 49-run partnership, Smart top scored for the innings with 28 not out and McMillan was the eighth and final wicket to fall on 22.

With a total of 8 for 117 to defend the YMCC needed to bowl well and while all bowlers had glimpse of success, the City Colts were able to pass the total with five wickets down; they proceed to finish at 7 for 146 from their 40 overs.

Angus McMillan took 2 for 21 off 8 overs; Brock McCabe took 1 for 20 off 7 overs; Matt Casey 1 for 24 off 8 overs and debut wicket taker Ben Welsh had 1 for 9 off 4 overs including a six.

B Grade

Saturday saw the return of cricket after the Christmas break and wet weather. B Grade hosted Milawa at Lonsdale Reserve, Mulwala on a perfect day for cricket.

With the visitors winning the toss, they elected to take the field and the Lakers were to bat.

The Lakers got off to a steady start with 16 runs coming from the first 5 overs but then fell in a hole losing 5 wickets for 19 runs in the next 7 overs to be 5/35.

The evergreen Adam Dodd then partnered with Cooper Bennett to steady the innings and point the Lakers in the right direction.

With smart running between the wickets and punishing anything loose, the pair put on 86 for the sixth wicket.

Bennett was dismissed for 50, with the score on 121 and in the 30th over. Harry Barker then got a beauty to be dismissed very next ball.

At 7/121 at the end of the 30th over, the Lakers looked shaky again but Dodd continued to use his experience to keep things calm and on track.

Dodd finally dismissed for 32 and then with the dismissal of Tom Lovel the Lakers were 9/137 with 3 overs to go.

Will Turnell 9 not out and Ben Pickering 13 not out saw out the innings to get the Lakers to an impressive 9/160 at the close of the innings. A very defendable total for the Lakers.

In the field the Lakers took a little while to get back in the groove, but once they got going they were able to put good pressure on the Milawa batters and cause wickets to fall.

Wickets to Will Turnell - 1/16, Harry Barker - 1/13 and Cooper Bennett 1/19 got the Lakers away to a good start in the field.

Runs were not rapidly flowing for the Milawa side and this seemed to frustrate them.

Then with the introduction of young leg spinner Tom Lovel, the Lakers were getting well on top. Lovel spun a web over the Milawa batters and had them mesmerised. Lovel taking 5 wickets in 6 overs, 3 bowled, one lbw and 1 stumped to decimate the Milawa middle and lower order.

Lovel finishing with the excellent figures of 5/16 from 6 overs to be the only multiple wicket taker. Rod Peters the other wicket taker with 1/8.

Milawa all out for 89 and a big win for the Lakers.

Next week sees the B Grade at Mulwala again hosting Delatite.
