Lakers’ Masters in masterful display

The Barooga Masters again proved a happy hunting ground for the Lakers’ Masters.

A stout group of 35-years-plus-old cricketers joined in the festivity of the week-long cricket carnival and the old fellas bowled, batted and fielded belying their years.

The team took to the field each day and posted scores of 213, 181, 157, 150 and 206 over the five matches and while being undefeated, it all came down to a slightly inferior run rate that denied the Lakers’ Masters the Title of Carnival Champions and finished in second place.

The sore muscles, tightness and strains were all forgotten as the smell of the contest fared in the nostrils and took over all rational thoughts.

“Old men began to dream of their youth again and of holding back father time. Some were more successful than others,” Yarrawonga Mulwala Cricket Club’s Peter Brear said.

“The mainstay of the team were Rob Irvine, Cam Scott, Spud McLintock, Travis White, Dennis Phibbs and there were a few cam- Bozzola took four for 55 off four overs, and Dean Carroll, Greg Butts, Gary Athanitis, eo performances on days when the SOS went can testify there were still some handy fossils Josh Bozzola, Shane McDonald, Steve Lappin, out when there were gaps in the eleven.” swinging the willow in the carnival.

A great effort by all involved and going so close has only fired up the lads to return again in 2023.
