Students embrace National Tree Day

By Emma Prior

The Respect group of Sacred Heart Primary School with the assistance of Toyota Yarrawonga and Cobram planted some new trees in the school grounds on Thursday, July 28 as part of National Tree Day.

With well-known car brand Toyota a sponsor of National Tree Day, the local branch each year chooses a local area which will benefit greatly from some new vegetation.

National Tree Day has grown into Australia's largest community tree planting and nature care event with the program a call to action for all Australians to get their hands dirty and give back to their community.

The last Friday in July is dedicated to Schools Tree Day with activities ranging from planting bush tucker gardens, building habitat for native wildlife, nature play and more.

Cobram and Yarrawonga Toyota Service Manager Rohan Isaac who took part in the planting of the native trees at Sacred Heart said it is a great initiative to be involved in and

Toyota look forward to continuing to take part.

“Each year the dealership choose where to attend and plant trees while alternating between Yarrawonga and Cobram,” Mr Isaac said.

“We always pick somewhere we think the trees could be utilised which this year was Sacred Heart Primary School in Yarrawonga.

“We received the plants from the Cobrawonga Nursery and made sure to plant only Australian natives.

“The respect group as well as some further students of differing grades came out and helped plant the trees which was great to see, and we look forward to taking part in National Tree Day again next year.”

Sacred Heart Primary School Principal Arn Gorman was grateful for the newly planted trees which will benefit the school in many facets.

“One of the big things we have needed at the school is shade so these trees will provide that as well as adding to the beauty,” Ms Gorman said.

“Another thing the school is working towards is ensuring the environment so the planting of more trees will go a way to ensuring that.

“The National Tree Planting Day is also a big part of the leadership role at the school too which the students love to take part in.”
