Heaviest rain spares the Goulburn Valley

By Monique Preston

Decent rain fell across northern Victoria last week, but it was nothing compared to other parts of the state.

Some areas received more than 200 mm of rain in the 24 hours to 9 am last Thursday, but the official Bureau of Meteorology recording at Shepparton Airport showed only 6.8 mm of rain in that period.

Elsewhere in the region, Echuca received 8.2 mm, Rochester 8 mm and Kyabram 5.2 mm.

Violet Town had 19 mm of rain, Yarrawonga 30 mm and Wodonga 23 mm.

Elmore sheep farmer Dianne Trewick said the rain came just in time to keep the pasture going.

“It was getting a bit desperate for a moment as the frost killed off the dry grass but now there will be plenty springing through,” Mrs Trewick said.

This grass will go towards feeding autumn lambs which are now packing on the pounds.

In the seven days from Thursday, June 3 until 3 pm on Thursday, June 10, Shepparton recorded a total of 28.4 mm of rain.

The heaviest rain came in the 24 hours to 9 am on June 3, when 15 mm fell.

Sunday, June 6 and Monday, June 7 also saw rain in Shepparton, with 2.2 mm and 1 mm falling respectively.

Showers to 9 am last Wednesday produced 2.6 mm of rain in Shepparton, following 5.2 mm on Tuesday, June 8.

From 9 am to 3 pm on Thursday, Shepparton had recorded 2.4 mm.
